The Annals

The Club Annals constitute the official historical record of the Friday Breakfast Club.

Where the Constitution establishes the laws, principles and institutions of the Club, the Annals preserve the significant events through which those laws and traditions have developed.

The Annals record matters of constitutional, ceremonial and historical significance, including the foundation of the Club, notable exemptions and pardons, membership events, important appointments, distinguished occasions and other events deemed worthy of permanent record.

Each entry records the circumstances of the event, its outcome and, where appropriate, its significance to the continuing constitutional tradition of the Club.

The Annals are not a record of ordinary Friday meetings. Inclusion is reserved for events of lasting significance to the institution.

All persons appearing within the Annals shall be identified by their recognised ceremonial name, title or constitutional office, in accordance with the traditions of the Club.

The Annals shall be maintained as a continuing historical record, with significant events added as the Club’s history develops.

Date: 2023

The Friday Breakfast Club was established in 2023 as a formal institution dedicated to the observance of the Friday morning breakfast tradition at Greggs.

From its foundation, the Club established the principle that Friday breakfast was not merely a meal, but a regular constitutional observance deserving of ceremony, fellowship and pastry.

The founding arrangements established the Friday meeting as the Club’s principal gathering and provided the foundation upon which the Constitution, membership system, offices and subsequent traditions would develop.

The Club’s early membership included its founding figures, whose participation established the traditions that continue to govern the Club to the present day.

The foundation of the Club is recognised as the beginning of the constitutional history of the Friday Breakfast Club.

Date: Christmas 2023 – January 2024

During the Christmas period of 2023, the Club recognised that the ordinary Friday principle could reasonably be relaxed in recognition of the festive season.

A Christmas Armistice was therefore established, permitting Members to visit Greggs at any time during the Christmas period without incurring the usual constitutional consequences associated with attending on an alternative working day.

The Armistice was originally intended to remain effective until 2 January 2024. Its operation was subsequently extended until 8 January 2024, ensuring that the festive exemption continued through the first working period of the new year.

The Christmas Armistice established an important principle within the Club: that the Constitution may accommodate exceptional circumstances where the spirit of the Club requires it.

It remains one of the earliest and most significant exemptions in the Club’s constitutional history.

Date: May 2024

In May 2024, the Chancellor was unable to fulfil his customary responsibility of securing the conference suite for a Club meeting due to an unavoidable school-run commitment.

Recognising the exceptional circumstances, the Club granted the Chancellor an Attendance Pardon.

The pardon prevented the circumstances from being treated as a failure of his ordinary Club responsibilities and established an early example of the Club’s willingness to distinguish between constitutional breach and genuine inability to fulfil an obligation.

The Attendance Pardon subsequently became part of the Club’s constitutional history as an example of an exemption granted where circumstances justified compassion over strict application of the ordinary rule.

The Chancellor’s standing within the Club remained unaffected.

Date: 14 July 2025

On 14 July 2025, the Guardian was formally reinstated as a full and permanent Member of the Friday Breakfast Club.

The reinstatement restored the Guardian to the full rights and standing of Club membership and confirmed his continuing place within the constitutional order of the Club.

Following his reinstatement, the Guardian was recognised under the ceremonial title The Verdant Vegan of the Morning Spread and entrusted with the custodianship of the Club’s designated vegan sausage roll.

His reinstatement consequently became significant not only as a membership event, but as the foundation of the office and tradition subsequently associated with the Keeper of the Vegan Sausage Roll and the Vegan Doctrine.

The event remains an important chapter in the continuing development of the Club’s membership and ceremonial offices.

Date: 12 September 2025

On 12 September 2025, the Strongman was formally inducted as a permanent Member of the Friday Breakfast Club.

His induction followed the Club’s established requirements for admission and marked his transition from participant to recognised constitutional Member.

Upon induction, he was granted the ceremonial title The Strongman of the Sausage Roll, reflecting his established character within the Club and his place within its ceremonial traditions.

His admission expanded the permanent membership of the Club and added a new figure to its developing constitutional and social history.

The date of 12 September 2025 is therefore recorded in the Annals as the formal beginning of their permanent membership.

Date: November 2025

In November 2025, the Club recognised an exceptional occasion concerning the Keeper of the Digital Gate

In celebration of the successful completion of a security audit, the Court authorised the Keeper to attend one Friday Breakfast Club meeting as a Guest of Honour, notwithstanding the ordinary requirements governing Club membership.

The exception was deliberately limited to the single occasion and did not confer permanent membership or alter the ordinary constitutional requirements for admission.

The event demonstrated the Club’s ability to recognise distinguished circumstances while preserving the integrity of its membership rules.

The Guest of Honour Exception is therefore recorded as a notable example of ceremonial hospitality within the constitutional history of the Friday Breakfast Club.

The Hash Brown Benediction is remembered as one of the Club’s more sacred pastry-adjacent traditions.

On the occasion in question, The Keeper of the Conference Suite was reportedly blessed with an exceptional allocation of three hash browns, exceeding the customary provision of two.

The unexpected third hash brown was received not merely as an additional item of breakfast, but as a sign of extraordinary favour from the pastry order.

The event subsequently became known as the Hash Brown Benediction, establishing the principle that, on rare occasions, the breakfast establishment may bestow upon a worthy Member a portion exceeding the ordinary constitutional allocation.

The Benediction remains a celebrated example of unexpected abundance within the Club’s history.
